Just days into her reign, Lopez is already working to construct a website that tracks her appearances, activities and initiatives, giving students and the community a chance to help guide her actions and priorities. Lopez aims to change that and make the most of her term–and beyond–by setting a new course for Miss SUU, more clearly defining the role as a University ambassador, contributor and leader. “I want to make a real impression on campus so I can look back and be able to say that I was not only Miss SUU but that I helped to develop positive initiatives, like scholarships, and show prospective students the great things that SUU has to offer.”įollowing its departure from the Miss America program, the role of Miss SUU has undergone some changes and is currently, in part, somewhat undefined.
“I want to be a voice for students,” Lopez said. Not only is Lopez not just a pretty face, she intends to do more than simply rest on her royal title. She passed away earlier this year so, for me, this experience is a kind of tribute to her.”
“My grandmother was homecoming queen,” Lopez reminisced. In addition to being named Miss SUU, Lopez also assumes the title of Homecoming Queen, a designation she has a personal connection to. Moore will serve as first attendant, joined by Brooke Merrill, a junior communication major from St. “I decided to compete in the Miss SUU pageant to stretch myself and to get out of the practice room and try something new and to get connected not only with the campus but with other students I might not have met just staying in the vocal performance building,” said Lopez.įirst runner up to Lopez’s Miss SUU title is Becca Moore, a senior nutrition major from Iowa City, Iowa. Another Homecoming has come and gone, leaving behind some badly trampled grass, a new flock of True T-Birds and countless memories for those true to SUU.īut for Lindsey Lopez, Homecoming’s end is just the beginning.Īfter facing steep competition with eight other royal hopefuls, Lopez was crowned Miss SUU 2013 and now begins her reign as Southern Utah University’s resident royal.Ī native of Cedar Hills, Utah, Lopez is a junior in SUU’s music department, pursuing a degree in vocal performance.Ĭrowned by her predecessor, Beth Snarr, Lopez says she was completely surprised to be named the winner and is hopeful that her stirring operatic performance of Habanera, the famed aria from Bizet’s opera Carmen, helped cement her win.
